FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: How long are those pieces and where do I buy them?
A: They are not pieces or sections. The breaks you see approximately every 3' are control joints. The continuous concrete curbing is installed on each job site.
Q: How deep do you dig and how deep is the footing?
A: We dig about 2½ inches deep by 10 inches wide. This can be done without disturbing your existing plantings and lawn. There is no footing. Like your concrete sidewalk, patio and driveway, the concrete curb floats on the surface.
Q: What kind of base is placed under the curb?
A: We make sure the base under the curb is compacted and level. Sometimes we will put a small layer of sand under the curb to ensure it is level. If the curb does settle a little, the control joints should contain the cracking.
Q: What about frost and ground movement?
A: The benefit of our concrete curb is that it is a continuous piece of concrete. Individual blocks or bricks will shift over time and in the winter. Our curb is reinforced with fibermesh which is designed to take the place of rebar or steel and adds strength to the curb. We add air entrainment additive to all of our concrete mixes to further protect your curbs against our harsh winters. We place control joints every 3 - 4 feet and cut about 40% into the depth of the curb. This is designed to control the cracking of the curb during shifting periods such as our freeze and thaw cycle. If the curb does crack, it will usually crack in the control joint and not be noticeable.
Q: Will the curbing crack?
A: We experience very little cracking in our installations, however concrete curbs, like any other type of concrete, can and will crack. We place control joints 3-4 feet apart to control cracking. Typically you might see one or two small hairline cracks develop in a long stretch of curb. This is not usually very noticeable, and can be safely ignored. If cracking does occur, it will usually be in the control joint. If cracking should occur outside of the control joint, we will be happy to repair it for you at no charge within the 1 year warranty period. View Care and Warranty.
Q: Is the colour painted or stained on the curb?
A: All of the colours are specifically designed for use in exterior curbs and are added to the concrete during the mixing process. The colour will not flake off or disappear over time. You may experience a little fading, but this is normal in any outdoor colour application. We seal all curbs after installation to protect the colour from UV rays and harsh winter weather. A sealer aids in maximizing the lifetime of the colour. We recommend sealing every year. We can show you how to do this or we would be happy to provide this annual service at a nominal additional charge.
Q: Will my existing landscape be disturbed?
A: No, the only piece of heavy equipment we use is our truck and trailer to get us to the site. This remains on the street, back alley or driveway. Our other equipment is small and specifically designed to work on and around existing landscape without disturbing it. View The Process.
Q: How flexible is the design?
A: Our machinery is very compact and manoeuvrable, and can handle almost any terrain and fit into many tight corners. Meeting existing patios, sidewalks or driveways is neatly done. Straight lines, circles or free-style curves are all possible. After we remove the sod with our sod-cutter, you can visualize the final design more clearly, and make changes before the curb is extruded. View Styles and Patterns.
Q: Will concrete curbs stop the grass from migrating into my flower garden?
A: Extruded concrete curbing has a proven track record at preventing lawn grass from entering your gardens. Our curbs are 6" wide and will stop regular lawn grass from spreading into your garden area. They will not, however, stop the spreading of quack grass and some tuberous weeds. The shape of the curb helps keeps the mulch covering in your garden bed in place and allows you to cut your lawn right up to the outside edge - minimizing trimming. The curbs are wide enough that the mower will not disturb your mulch. Provided you ensure that grass clippings do not go into your flower beds, you wont have to deal with weeding lawn grass out of your beds anymore. You also do not have to weed in between this edging since it is all one continuous piece. And, unlike plastic edging, you wont have to dig it up yearly to reset it after the frost heaves it.
